How to Install EcoQuilt Expert Under Rafters in Loft Spaces

Difficulty: Easy • 6 steps

Watch

This step by step guide explains how to fit EcoQuilt Expert beneath your loft rafters, creating a continuous layer of insulation to help reduce heat loss through the roof.

EcoQuilt Expert is a thin, flexible multifoil insulation that is easy to handle in loft spaces. Its lightweight construction makes measuring, cutting and fitting straightforward, while its fibre free design makes it a convenient choice for DIY installation.

Before You Start

Check the roof for leaks, signs of damp and damaged timber. Complete any repairs before fitting the insulation. Where a non breathable roofing felt is present, we recommend installing lap vents before adding multifoil insulation.

Keep ventilation openings clear and leave the required space around electrical equipment, recessed lights and any heat producing appliances. Follow the relevant manufacturer’s clearance instructions.

Measure and Cut Your First Section

Unroll the EcoQuilt Expert and measure the length needed to cover your first section of rafters.

Mark your cutting line, then trim the insulation using multifoil insulation scissors. Cutting each section to size before lifting it into position will make it easier to handle and secure.

Secure EcoQuilt Expert Under the Rafters

Position the insulation across the underside of the rafters. Use a heavy duty staple gun with 14mm staples to fix it to the timber.

Keep the material taut as you move along, stapling into each rafter at approximately 300mm intervals. Work steadily across the section to create an even, secure layer.

Fit the Next Section with an Overlap

osition the next length of EcoQuilt Expert so it overlaps the section already installed by at least 50mm.

Maintain this overlap along the full join to keep the insulation coverage continuous and avoid gaps between neighbouring sections.

The overlapping joins do not need taping for this installation method, provided the full 50mm overlap is maintained.

Cover the Remaining Loft Rafters

Repeat the measuring, cutting and stapling process until the underside of the roof is fully insulated.

Keep each length taut and overlap all adjoining sections by a minimum of 50mm. Trim the material neatly around structural timbers and other obstacles, ensuring there are no open gaps in the insulation coverage.

Optional: Add a Second Layer of EcoQuilt Expert

For improved thermal performance, you can fit two layers of EcoQuilt Expert. Decide whether you want to use this method before installing the first layer.

Recess the first layer approximately halfway into the rafters and staple it to the sides of the timber. Keep the insulation taut and maintain at least 50mm overlaps between sections. This leaves an air cavity on either side of the recessed layer.

Next, fit the second layer across the underside of the rafters. Secure it with staples at approximately 300mm intervals and overlap adjoining sections by a minimum of 50mm.
