How to Fit SuperQuilt onto Solid Walls

This step-by-step guide shows you how to install SuperQuilt Insulation onto the inside of solid walls, helping reduce heat loss and improve the thermal performance of your home.

SuperQuilt is a high performance multifoil insulation blanket designed for use in walls, roofs and floors. Its flexible construction makes it easy to cut, handle and install, while the reflective layers provide excellent thermal performance without the thickness associated with many traditional insulation materials.

When fully taped and sealed with ThermaSeal Foil Tape, SuperQuilt also acts as a vapour control layer, helping create a continuous airtight layer and reduce the risk of condensation.

Install Timber Battens

Start by fixing 25mm timber battens directly onto the solid wall. The battens can be installed horizontally or vertically and should generally be spaced between 400mm and 600mm centres.

These battens create an important air cavity between the solid wall and the SuperQuilt Insulation.

Deeper battens can be used where required depending on the U-value you are looking to achieve.

Measure and Cut the SuperQuilt

Measure the area you need to cover, then roll out the SuperQuilt and mark the required length.

Cut the insulation using a sharp cutting knife or Multifoil Insulation Scissors. SuperQuilt is flexible and easy to cut, allowing it to be trimmed neatly around windows, doors and other obstacles.

Staple the SuperQuilt in Place

Position the SuperQuilt against the timber battens and staple it securely in place using 14mm staples at approximately 300mm intervals.

Keep the insulation pulled taut as you work across the wall. Where two sections meet, overlap the SuperQuilt by at least 50mm.

Tape and Seal the SuperQuilt

Seal all 50mm overlaps with ThermaSeal Foil Tape, then tape around the perimeter, windows, doors and any penetrations.

Press the tape firmly into place to create a continuous airtight vapour control layer.

Install Counter Battens

Fix 25mm counter battens over the SuperQuilt, screwing through the insulation into the original battens behind.

Space the counter battens at 400mm to 600mm centres, adding extra battens around windows, doors and wall edges for fixing the plasterboard.

Fit Your Plasterboard

Screw standard plasterboard directly to the counter battens, following the plasterboard manufacturer's recommended fixing instructions.

Foil backed plasterboard is not normally required because the SuperQuilt acts as the vapour control layer when all joints, overlaps and edges have been fully taped and sealed.

Optional Double Layer of SuperQuilt

For improved thermal performance, install a second layer of SuperQuilt with 38mm battens between the two layers, followed by 25mm counter battens and plasterboard.
