How to Install the EcoPro Cellar Insulation Kit

This step by step guide explains how to install the EcoPro Cellar Insulation Kit to your cellar or basement walls and ceiling.

The kit uses EcoQuilt Expert, a thin 6 layer reflective multifoil insulation designed to help reduce heat loss, cold surfaces and draughts. At approximately 15mm thick before installation and around 6mm when compressed, it is particularly useful in cellars where headroom and internal space can be limited.

EcoQuilt Expert can be installed to the cellar ceiling to help reduce heat loss from the rooms above, or fitted to both the walls and ceiling when creating a warmer, more usable cellar space.

Before You Start

Check the cellar walls, ceiling and timbers for any signs of water ingress or significant damp. Any existing moisture problems should be addressed before installing the insulation.

Make sure the surfaces are clear and that any ventilation openings are kept unobstructed.

Insulating the Cellar Ceiling

Roll out the EcoQuilt Expert across the underside of the ceiling joists and cut it to the required length using a cutting knife or Multifoil Scissors.

Position the insulation underneath the joists and staple it securely into the timber using 14mm staples.

Keep the EcoQuilt pulled taut as you work across the ceiling, stapling at approximately 300mm intervals.

Continue Across the Ceiling

Continue installing EcoQuilt Expert until the whole ceiling area is covered.

Overlap each new section by approximately 50mm to create a continuous layer of insulation.

Trim neatly around any pipes, cables or other obstructions where required.

Tape and Seal

Once the ceiling insulation is installed, fully tape and seal all 50mm overlaps using ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape.

Seal around the perimeter and any cuts or penetrations to create a continuous airtight layer.

Fully taping and sealing the EcoQuilt allows it to perform as an insulating vapour control layer.

Install Ceiling Counter Battens

If you are covering the insulation with plasterboard or another internal finish, install minimum 25mm timber counter battens underneath the EcoQuilt.

Fix the battens through the insulation and securely into the ceiling joists using suitable Multifoil Insulation Screws.

Your plasterboard or chosen finish can then be fixed directly to the battens.

If the cellar is only being used for storage and a finished ceiling is not required, the EcoQuilt can be left exposed.

Install Battens to Cellar Walls

If you are also insulating the cellar walls, install minimum 25mm timber battens directly onto the wall at approximately 400–600mm centres.

This creates an air cavity behind the EcoQuilt, helping the reflective insulation perform effectively.

If suitable timber studwork is already present, the EcoQuilt can be fixed directly to the existing timber structure.

Counter Batten and Finish

If the walls are being plasterboarded, install a second layer of minimum 25mm timber battens over the EcoQuilt.

Fix through the insulation into the battens behind, then install your plasterboard or chosen internal finish directly onto the counter battens.

Your cellar walls and ceiling are now insulated, helping to reduce heat loss and create a warmer, more comfortable space.
