How-To Guide

How to Insulate Above a Concrete Floor Using SuperQuilt

Difficulty: Easy • 4 steps

Watch

This guide will provide a step-by-step procedure to use SuperQuilt Insulation on concrete floors. SuperQuilt is proven to save on cost, space, and installation time compared to rigid PIR insulation. PIR manufacturers include Kingspan and Celotex.

SuperQuilt is fully LABC and BDA certified for solid concrete floors. The multi-layered blanket can commonly achieve building regulations standalone in floors. You can retrieve a U-value calculation in a PDF document, which can be passed onto building control for acceptance — this can be downloaded by visiting our free and instant online U-value calculator.

SuperQuilt's LABC certificate can be found here.

Installing First Run of SuperQuilt

Rolling out the first run of SuperQuilt insulation over a concrete floor

SuperQuilt can be rolled out vertically or horizontally along the concrete floor. Leave enough material at the edges to protrude above the floor deck.

Ensure the concrete floor is fully clean, flat, and debris-free.

Joints and Taping

Ensure SuperQuilt is butt jointed with other layers on both the verticals and horizontals, with no overlaps.

Fully tape and seal all butt joints of SuperQuilt with 75mm ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape.

Installing Battens

Timber battens or joists are laid over the top of SuperQuilt at 400mm centres, evenly spaced. The minimum batten depth is 50mm — increasing the batten depth enhances performance.

SuperQuilt will compress to around 7mm once timber is installed above.

Finish with Flooring

Proceed with installing your timber boarding floor.

The deck is then fixed at 200mm centres, with 37mm screws into the joists or battens below.

Disclaimer – SuperQuilt should be installed in harmony with the manufacturer's certificate, fixing instructions, and good building practice.
