How to Insulate Under Carpets, Laminate or Vinyl

This step by step guide explains how to insulate under carpet, laminate and vinyl flooring using our high performing, easy to install, EcoTec FloorFoam Insulation Kit.

EcoTec FloorFoam is a 4mm high density insulation designed for use beneath carpet, wood, laminate and vinyl floors. Its true aluminium foil outer layers help reduce heat loss and cold draughts, while the built in vapour control layer helps protect against rising moisture. FloorFoam also provides additional sound insulation between floors.

Rolling Out and Cutting

Roll out your EcoTec FloorFoam across the floor to the required length, making sure it is positioned correctly before cutting neatly to size using Multifoil Scissors or a sharp knife.

You can easily cut around door frames and radiator pipes.

Stapling the FloorFoam

Staple around all the edges of the FloorFoam using a Heavy Duty Staple Gun Kit. Once it is secure, trim off any extra material around the edges for a neat finish.

If the floor is concrete, this can be fixed down with a non-solvent adhesive or double-sided tape instead.

Cover the entire Floor Area

Continue laying the FloorFoam across the whole floor, joining each piece neatly edge to edge. Do not overlap the material, as this can create an uneven finish.

Taping and Sealing

Once the FloorFoam is fully installed, seal around the edges and along all butt joints using the ThermaSeal Joining Tape provided in the Insulation Kit. This helps stop draughts and moisture from coming up through the floor.

Run the foil tape slightly up the wall or skirting board to help prevent cold draughts around the edges.

Installing Grippers (Carpet)

If you are laying carpet, first fix the carpet grippers in place on top of the FloorFoam. This will not affect its performance. Next, lay the flooring underlay over the FloorFoam and trim it neatly to fit the room.

Laying Your Flooring

If you are installing vinyl, carpet tiles or thin click flooring, lay a 3–4mm plywood sheet over the FloorFoam first. This creates a firm, smooth base for your flooring. Once fitted, install your chosen floor covering and enjoy a warmer, draught-free room.
