How to Insulate your Garage Door

Here we detail how to insulate your garage door effectively, without a professional or great expense.

This is a cost-effective way to start enjoying your garage space. We use a highly reflective multifoil insulation to ensure you get the results you desire and can enjoy a more ambient temperature all year round.

By insulating your garage door, you are preventing cold bridging via the door. This is the area of the garage most prone to cold bridging, as it is metal, which is susceptible to this. Once you have installed the Garage Door Insulation Kit, you will notice a significant decline in draughts and, if present, condensation. Your energy bills will reduce if you ordinarily have a heat source in there, as you will require less energy to achieve the same temperature once insulated. A quick, simple way to make a massive improvement to your garage space.

Clean the Garage Door

The back of the garage door, facing internally, should be completely clean and free from grease, dirt, and debris. First use a brush to wipe away any loose dirt, then follow with a damp cloth and clean until there is no dirt left. Allow the door to dry prior to installation.

Note: this step is critical, as a clean surface will enable the multifoil to hold securely in place.

Measure the Garage Door

Measure the garage door, both width and height, and note these dimensions. This will ensure you cut the correct amount of material.

Roll the Insulation Out and Cut

Use the multifoil insulation scissors and cut the insulation to size so that the first run covers the entire width.

Install Double Sided Tape

Install the double-sided tape at regular intervals, distributed evenly on the door edge or bracing.

Press down firmly on the tape to ensure a good, secure bond between the multifoil insulation and the garage door.

Remove the Backing Paper and Secure

Start at the bottom right-hand side and remove the backing paper just before installing. Ensure the insulation is pulled taut, then apply pressure where the insulation meets the double-sided adhesive tape.

Repeat

Repeat the process until you have full coverage, overlapping each layer slightly for a continuous finish.

You may need to cut the multifoil insulation to avoid overhang and ensure a perfect fit.

ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape the Joints

To finish, apply ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape to the joins on the insulation between each strip.

We always advise using foil joining tape all around the edges too — tape along the insulation at the top of the garage door, but also wrap it over the edge of the door for both support and an effective seal.
