How to Insulate your Loft Ceiling (Under Rafters)

This step by step guide will show you how to install the EcoPro Loft Ceiling Insulation Kit beneath the rafters of a pitched roof.

The kit contains EcoQuilt Expert, a thin and flexible multifoil insulation designed to reduce heat loss through your roof. At approximately 15mm thick and around 6mm when installed, it provides thermal performance comparable to approximately 50mm of rigid PIR insulation or 100mm of fibre insulation.

EcoQuilt Expert is lightweight, easy to cut and contains no harmful or irritating fibres, making it ideal for DIY loft insulation projects.

Before You Begin

Inspect the roof for any leaks, damp or damaged timbers before installing the insulation. Any necessary repairs should be completed first. If you have a non-breathable felt present, we recommend the use of Lap vents before installing Multifoil Insulation.

Do not cover ventilation openings, electrical equipment, recessed lighting or heat producing appliances. Always maintain the clearances recommended by the manufacturer.

Measure and Cut the First Length

Roll out the EcoQuilt Expert and measure the length required for your first section.

Mark the insulation before cutting it to size using the multifoil insulation scissors included within the kit. The lightweight and flexible construction makes EcoQuilt Expert easy to measure, handle and cut inside the loft.

Staple the Insulation Beneath the Rafters

Position the Multifoil Insulation across the underside of the roof rafters and secure it using the Heavy Duty Staple Gun and 14mm staples provided.

Pull the insulation taut as you work and staple it to each rafter at approximately 300mm intervals. This will hold the insulation securely and help create a neat, continuous layer beneath the roof.

Install the Next Section and Overlap

Overlap the two sections by a minimum of 50mm. This overlap is important because it helps maintain a continuous insulation layer and prevents warm air from escaping through gaps between the sections.

The overlapped sections do not need to be taped, provided a complete 50mm overlap is maintained.

Continue Across the Loft Ceiling

Continue measuring, cutting and stapling the EcoQuilt Expert until the entire underside of the roof is covered.

Keep each section taut and maintain the minimum 50mm overlap between adjoining pieces. Cut carefully around structural timbers and other obstacles while ensuring there are no exposed gaps within the insulation layer.

Want to Double the Performance?

For greater thermal performance, you can install a second layer of EcoQuilt Expert. This method must be planned before fixing the first layer.

Recess the first layer approximately halfway into the rafters and staple it to the sides of the timber. Pull the insulation taut and overlap adjoining sections by at least 50mm. This creates an air cavity behind and in front of the first layer.

Once the recessed layer is complete, install the second layer across the face of the rafters. Staple it into place at approximately 300mm intervals, maintaining a minimum 50mm overlap between adjoining sections.

If you plan to board over the insulation, install minimum 25mm counter battens over the second layer before fitting plasterboard or your chosen internal finish.
