How To Insulate Your Walls With EcoQuilt Expert

This step-by-step guide shows you how to insulate your walls with EcoQuilt Expert, helping reduce heat loss and keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

EcoQuilt Expert is a flexible insulation blanket with six layers of reflective foil and wadding. It is easy to cut and fit, making it ideal for DIY installation. When fully taped and sealed with ThermaSeal Foil Tape, it also acts as a vapour control layer to help reduce the risk of condensation.

Install Timber Battens

Fix 25mm timber battens directly to the wall, running horizontally or vertically. Space them 400–600mm apart, measuring from the centre of one batten to the centre of the next.

These battens create an air gap between the wall and the insulation. Deeper battens can also be used if required.

Measuring and Cutting

Measure the area you want to cover, then roll out EcoQuilt Expert and mark the length needed. Cut the insulation using a cutting knife or multifoil scissors, both available in our Multifoil Fitting Kit.

Staple the Insulation in Place

Starting at one end of the wall, hold the insulation against the timber battens and staple it to them every 300mm. Keep it taut as you work, maintaining the air gap behind it. Overlap each new strip of insulation by at least 50mm.

We recommend using our heavy-duty staple gun and 14mm staples.

Using ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape to Seal

Seal every overlap and all edges around the wall with ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape. Press the tape down firmly to ensure it sticks securely, leaving no gaps. This creates a continuous, airtight layer that helps reduce draughts and the risk of condensation.

Allow approximately one roll of ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape for every 30m² of EcoQuilt Expert.

Install Counter Battens

Fix 25mm timber battens over the insulation, screwing through into the original battens. Space them 400–600mm apart, measured from centre to centre.

These additional battens create an air gap between the insulation and plasterboard and provide a secure fixing point for your boards.

Fit battens around windows and the wall perimeter to support the edges of the plasterboard.

Fit Your Plasterboard

Screw your plasterboard to the battens, following the board manufacturer’s fixing instructions. Your wall is then ready for finishing and decorating.

Foil-backed plasterboard is not needed, as EcoQuilt Expert acts as a vapour control layer when fully taped and sealed with ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape.

For extra insulation, you can choose insulated plasterboard, or install a double layer of EcoQuilt (with a 25mm between the two layers).
